However, when she saw his ugliness, she threw him out of Olympus in disgusts, and this fall made him lame. Nevertheless, Hephaestus was a very gifted and clever god, and with the talent of his hands and head he managed to earn his right back to Olympus. He preferred Athena for his bride, but since she pledged to be a virgin forever, he married Aphrodite instead, and spent most of his time creating ways on how to catch his unfaithful wife in the act of adultery, usually with Ares. She is depicted to have a very meek and modest personality, often seen veiled and holding either a flowered branch or a kettle in Athenian vase paintings. Although she was the first born child of Kronos and Rhea, she was the last one to be disgorged, making her both the eldest and the youngest of the siblings.

He sailed home for ten years, battered by sea storms and other misfortunes purposely caused by his nemesis, Poseidon, or by his own carelessness. He is kind-hearted but clever and sly enough to take advantage of situations or people. Odysseus could be dangerously proud some times, which was the primary cause of his persecution by Poseidon. He also, on two accounts, displayed personal weakness by having extramarital affairs. Nevertheless, despite his faults and all his hardships, he managed to get back home, defend his throne, and be united with his wife, Persephone, and Telemachus, his son.

His act of stealing Apollo’s cattle right after he was born was pivotal to his career. He was also the personal agent and son of Zeus, and his mother was Maia, daughter of the titan Atlas who held up the sky. Hermes is depicted as a shrewd but jolly character who liked talking to people and very much enjoyed the act of social intercourse. He, besides Athena, took interest in helping out many heroes in the myths, one of them was Perseus to whom he even gave his winged sandals. He is famous for his speed and flight, and his caduceus, followed by his winged sandals, are iconic.

Greek Mythology Dreamcast: Emily Clarke as Leto.
inspired by rescuepotts’ wonderful series
Leto (Λητω, Lêtô, Latona)
She is one of the female Titans, a consort of Zeus, with whom she bore the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. She is named the goddess of motherhood, modesty, and like her children, the protectress of the young. Hera relentlessly pursued her during her pregnancy, driving her into numerous hardships, but Leto endured with the help of her sister, Asterie, and assistance from other gods sent by Zeus. There is not much in literature that refers to her directly, although it was implied that she had a very soft-spoken personality, wherein most vase paintings depict her as a woman lifting her veil in modesty. She loves her children very much, as shown by the great pains she took to ensure their successful birth and survival.

Greek Mythology Dreamcast: Olivia Wilde as Eris.
inspired by rescuepotts’ wonderful series
Eris (Ερις, Discordia, Strife, Discord)
Eris is the goddess of strife, discord, contention, and rivalry. She is also the friend and sister of Ares, and with him she delights in the tumult of war, having an insatiable desire for bloodshed. Eris is one of the daughters of Nyx, and like her mother, she self-produced a variety of malevolent spirits called kakodaimones, which specifically catered to highlighting human attributes (e.g. folly, falsehood, etc) that called for war and conflict. She is most famous for instigating the Trojan war by rousing a rivalry between three powerful Olympian goddesses through a golden apple addressed “to the fairest.” She has a very manipulative character, with a knack for twisting words into insults that provoke anger, and clouding the judgements of gods and men alike.

Greek Mythology Dreamcast: Katie McGrath as Nyx.
inspired by rescuepotts’ wonderful series
Nyx (Nox, Νυξ, Nyktos, Night)
She is the goddess and personification of the night, one of the first-born elemental gods. She was born from Chaos and mated with her brother, Erebos (Darkness) to produce Aither (Light) and Hemera (Day). Nyx is a very powerful goddess, called by Homer as “the mighty subduer of gods and men,” where even the Olympian king, Zeus, is afraid of displeasing her. She travels across the sky at the end of each day, under a crown of dark mist from Erebos, which she casts over the world, thus bringing about the night. Nyx is the first goddess of fate to be born, and from her womb came the The Moirai (Fates) who watched over the destinies of god and men. She has a dark and solemn disposition, moreover supported by her giving birth to many daimones (malevolent spirits) that continue to haunt the lives of mortals in their lifetime.

Greek Mythology Dreamcast - Noomi Rapace as Nyx
Goddess of phantoms and of shadowy play, whose drowsy power divides the natural day; by fate’s decree you constant send the light to deepest hell, remote from mortal sight…with friendly aid dispel the fears of twilight’s dreadful shade. (x)

Greek Mythology Dreamcast: Hugh Jackman as Poseidon.
inspired by rescuepotts’ wonderful series
Poseidon (Ποσειδων, Neptunus, Neptune)
He is the great Olympian god of the sea, rivers, flood and drought, and earthquakes. As one of the three sons of Kronos, he was granted a third of creation, mainly the sea, to govern. His symbol of power is a trident, which he could use to stir giant tempests, shake the earth, and the shatter the hardest of rocks. He also created horses, which became his sacred animal, and was believed to have taught humans how to harness and ride them. Poseidon’s disposition reflects his element, making him very unpredictable, sometimes in a state of violent agitation, and other times in a state of amazing calm. He is not much of a rule-follower, and often ends up in dispute with many gods, his most famous ones usually against Athena.

Greek Mythology Dreamcast: Angelina Jolie as Hera.
inspired by rescuepotts’ wonderful series
Hera (Hêrê, Ἡρη, Juno)
She is the Olympian queen of the gods: goddess of women, marriage, and family. She was also the goddess of the sky and starry heavens. Hera is known for her proud, obstinate, and jealous nature, which often lead to the concoction of terrible misfortunes for those who acquired her ill will. Before marrying Zeus, she herself was a very powerful Mother Goddess, and her initial reluctance to succumb to Zeus’ charm is testimony to her extensive power. Though she is the protector of families, her idea of a “family” seems quite limited as she did not hesitate to throw her son, Hephaestus, out of Olympus, just because he was born lame. Her sacred animal is the peacock, and her sacred flower is the lotus.

Greek Mythology Dreamcast - Jessica Chastain as Hera
O royal Hera, of majestic mien, aerial-formed, divine, Zeus’ blessed queen, throned in the bosom of cerulean air, the race of mortals is thy constant care. (x)

Greek Mythology Dreamcast: Madeleine Stowe as Gaia.

Gaia (Gaea, Γαια, Terra, Earth)
She is the first primeval divinity of Earth, and one of the early primal elements that emerged at the dawn of time. Gaia was the great mother of all and from her came all manner of immortal, mortal, and monstrous creatures, sometimes born from her relations with other gods, and sometimes reproduced on her own. She is cunning and vengeful, often depicted as the enemies of the heavenly gods in myth, first by betraying her husband and son, Ouranos, then by helping the Olympians oust the Titans from power, and finally by raising the Giants to battle the Olympian gods. She is always seen, half-risen from the earth, for she could not separate from her element. The Karpoi, grain spirits, are her loyal servants.

Greek Mythology Dreamcast - Gemma Arterton as Gaia
I will sing of well-founded Earth, mother of all, eldest of all beings. She feeds all the creatures that are in the worlds, all that go upon the goodly land, and all that are in the paths of the seas, and all that fly: all these are fed of her store. Through you, O queen, men are blessed in their children and blessed in their harvests, and to you it belongs to give means of life to mortal men and to take it away. (x)

I look, in vain, for beginning and end of the heavens’ slow revolve: under an unknown eye of fire, I ascend feeling my wings dissolve. And, scorched by desire for the beautiful, I will not know the bliss, of giving my name to that abyss, that knows my tomb and funeral. (x)

Greek Mythology Dreamcast: Madeleine Stowe as Gaia.
inspired by rescuepotts’ wonderful series

(x)

…my arms are incomplete, grasping the empty air. Thanks to stars, incomparable ones, that blaze in the depths of the skies, all my destroyed eyes see, are the memories of suns. A silent suffering, and intense; the rock, the vulture, and the chain, all that the proud can feel of pain, the agony they do not show, the suffocating sense of woe, which speaks but in its loneliness, and then is jealous lest the sky should have a listener, nor will sigh until its voice is echoless.
